In the summer, many tree owners are often uncertain whether maintenance measures are beneficial or if they might actually cause the tree additional stress. Have you ever asked yourself this question? In fact, summer is a particularly good time to check a tree’s vitality. The condition of the leaves provides valuable clues about potential nutrient deficiencies and diseases. If care measures become necessary, we can often carry them out promptly, as the tree is active and, for example, pruning wounds can heal well.
A uniform yellowing of the leaves can indicate a nitrogen deficiency. Yellowing between the leaf veins while the veins themselves remain green, however, suggests an iron or manganese deficiency. Brown discoloration can be attributed to a potassium deficiency, stress from drought, or salt damage. Unusually small or deformed leaves also point to stress and nutrient deficiencies. If we notice any coatings, pustules, or sticky leaves, these are signs of powdery mildew, rust fungi, or pest infestations.
It’s crucial that a professional can recognize these symptoms early before the tree suffers lasting damage! For this reason, my sons Kevin, Alex, Luke, and William and I are out on many inspection appointments during these weeks. This gives us the opportunity to support the tree in its natural healing abilities. Through a gentle pruning of the crown, we relieve the tree’s structural load and simultaneously reduce its nutrient demand.
Such pruning can be done well in the summer because for so-called “bleeders” like maple, birch, or walnut, wound healing is often very effective in the summer, and sap loss is lower than with spring pruning. Depending on the diagnosis, we can also treat the tree bark with a special nutrient solution and enrich the soil with an organic slow-release fertilizer that is precisely tailored to the specific soil conditions.
To keep your trees healthy and safe, a regular annual inspection by our experienced arborists is essential.
Together with my sons, we offer this on-site inspection free of charge. Schedule your individual consultation with our office at 02645 / 9999-000. Baumdienst Siebengebirge, Main Office: The Robin Hood Inn, Bahnhofstraße 12, 53560 Vettelschoß.
Your trees will thank you for it!
