Spring Tree Care: With Consideration and Care

Von Gary Blackburn

The feathered tree inspector – also a professional in their field

These days, some of our customers ask us anxiously whether they have already missed the window for a professional tree inspection and pruning. From March 1st to September 30th, a nationwide pruning ban is in effect In Germany—and for good reason. Radical cutbacks on hedges and woody plants are strictly off-limits to protect nesting birds. However, light maintenance pruning is permitted year-round.

The Right Time for Pruning

At the same time, from a physiological perspective, spring is an ideal time for maintenance. Thanks to the beginning of the growing season and increasing sap flow, a tree can close wounds particularly quickly. While it might take several months for a cut to heal in late summer or fall, in spring, this often takes just two to three months. After only three days, so-called callus tissue begins to form—a natural protective layer that acts like a botanical band-aid, sealing entry points against fungi and bacteria.

Professionals always prune birches, walnut trees, maples, and certain other species when they are in leaf; otherwise, they cannot adequately close their wounds and will bleed sap.

Respecting Wildlife

Before a saw can even be used, the tree must be carefully examined. For our professional tree inspectors and surgeons, this goes without saying. Especially in spring, many birds build nests—sometimes deep within the branches, sometimes well-camouflaged in forks or the canopy. If nesting activity is discovered, pruning should be postponed until the breeding season is over. This mindfulness not only protects young birds but is also required by law.

Professional Tree Inspection: Safety Through Expertise

Alongside maintenance, professional tree inspection plays a central role. The trained eyes of our experts detect cracks, decay, or early stages of structural damage in the trunk and branches early on—often long before a layperson would notice any signs. This allows measures to be taken in a timely manner to ensure structural stability and prevent damage to people, animals, or property. Regular inspections preserve the enjoyment of your yard. They ensure safety and the long-term preservation of your trees.
